Cee Lo Green has said he is confident that MIA is sorry for the controversy she caused by raising her middle finger at the Super Bowl.

An unprecedented level of controversy was started when the 'Paper Planes' star made the gesture shortly before the camera cut away from her during Madonna's set last weekend.

Cee Lo, who also joined the Queen of Pop on stage, maintains that he wasn't even aware she did it until the following day.

Speaking on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno, he said: "It most certainly wasn't planned.

"I just think she got a little [caught up] in the heat of the moment and did something that I'm sure she regrets, but I didn't know anything about it until the day afterwards."

He added of his own appearance: "We were definitely trying to keep it a surprise. It was under strict orders of Queen Madonna that we didn't reveal the secret performance!"

'Give Me All Your Luvin'', Madonna's new tune featuring Nicki Minaj and MIA, debuted at No. 37 in this week's charts.
