Emmanuelle Riva Makes History With Best Actress Oscar Nomination At The Age Of 85

The Best Actress category for this year's Academy Awards contains not one but two record breakers, the youngest ever nominee, Quvenzhané Wallis and the oldest, Emmanuelle Riva at the grand age of 85.

The two actresses may have a 76 year age gap but they're both equally strong contenders to take home the Best Actress Oscar when the awards take place on February 24.

Louisiana schoolgirl Wallis is up for her part in 'Beasts of the Southern Wild' which she shot at the tender age of 6. Meanwhile French actress Riva receives her nod for the critically acclaimed 'Amour', becoming the oldest actress to be nominated in the category breaking Jessica Tandy's record for Driving Miss Daisy (1989), who was 80 at the time. Not only that but on February 24 she could be celebrating both her 86th birthday and a potential Oscar win!

For fact fans, Titantic actress Gloria Stuart was 87 when she was nominated for Best Actress in a supporting role in 1997 for Titanic, making her the oldest acting nominee ever.

Riva faces tough competition from not only Wallis but acting heavyweights Jessica Chastain for 'Zero Dark Thirty', Jennifer Lawrence for 'Silver Linings Playbook' and Naomi Watts for 'The Impossible'

French language film 'Amour' sees Riva plays half of an an elderly couple, Anne and Georges, who are retired music teachers with a daughter who lives abroad. Anne suffers a stroke which paralyses her on one side of her body. Written and directed by Michael Haneke the film has broken out of the Best Foreign Language Film category to also receive a Best Picture nomination.

We'll have to wait until February 24 to see who takes home the Oscar...
