She had a handful of very famous friends and always seemed game for a laugh - something that Freddie Mercury took full advantage of when he decided to take Princess Diana to a gay bar.

The late Queen frontman apparently dressed the royal as a man and smuggled her into a gay bar so they could enjoy a night out together without her being bothered.

And Cleo Rocos, who recalled the incident in her memoirs said Diana pulled the look off and was a "beautiful young man".

Diana and Freddie were good friends in the 1980s and would have caused a paparazzi frenzy if they'd been seen out partying together.

So he decided to disguise her and dressed Diana up as a man in an army jacket, cap and sunglasses for a night out at the Royal Vauxhall Tavern, south London.

Cleo, 50, recalled: "When we walked in... we felt she was obviously Princess Diana and would be discovered at any minute.

"But people just seemed to blank her. She sort of disappeared. But she loved it. She did look like a beautiful young man."

Cleo, who is best known for starring on the Kenny Everett Show in the 80s, made the claim in her book "The Power of Positive Drinking" serialised in the Sunday Times.

And she added that she and Everett, who was with them that night, managed to divert partygoers' attention elsewhere so Diana could order drinks undetected.

Diana died at the age of 36 in a car crash in Paris in 1997. Freddie died of pneumonia caused by AIDS at his London home in 1991.
