After weeks of gurning faces, jazz hands and a more colourful wardrobe than Joseph’s Technicolor dream coat, it was finally time for the much loved telly star to say his goodbyes.
The Daybreak correspondent found himself in the dance-off for the third time during Strictly’s Wembley special, proving that his popularity in the show has unfortunately waned.
The pair faced Westlife star Nicky Byrne and his partner Karen in the intense dance-off, which was made even scarier by the fact that it took place in front of 6000 people!
Dancing the Jive to Elvis Presley’s ‘Jailhouse rock’, Nicky received a fairly positive review from the judges. Bruno, who was as excitable as usual, called Nicky a “randy rascal” and added he was “all pumped up, ready to rock ‘n’ roll!”
Never one to miss a trick however, Craig Revel-Horwood noted that it was flat-footed and stompy before pointing out that there where “no retraction in any of your flicks”. Whatever that means! His flicks seemed to be a problem with the other judges too, with all of them saying that it needs improvement.
It wasn’t all doom and gloom for Nicky though as he scored a rather decent 30 points, But Richard didn’t fare as well.
Last night, Richard and Erin danced a very competent Salsa to the song ‘Club Tropicana’ by Wham, but they scored a rather low 24 points.
The dance received mixed comments from the judges, with half complimenting the party atmosphere he created and the others highlighting the technical faults. Head judge Len Goodman commented that it was “fun in the sun” before saying that it had “plenty of wham, bam, thank you maam!”
Ever the grumpy one, Craig said that the routine was “littered with timing issues” and was “stompy and flat-footed”. However, there was some reprieve when he commented that he rather liked the 3 backing dancers, saying they were “a very good addition!”
In fact, there were many distractions in Richard and Erin’s colourful routine; which included 3 scantily-clad males in tight yellow Speedos, inflatable palm trees and Richard pushing Erin off stage onto a crash mat!
But these were not enough to distract the judges in the dance-off as they all elected Richard to be eliminated from the competition.
Being the gentleman that he is, Richard heaped praise on the woman who taught him to dance- Erin Boag. He graciously said: “I always thought I'd miss the wardrobe most, but I don't think I will, I will miss Erin Boag, who - every Monday - it's like climbing a mountain, and every Monday she'd say 'welcome to another week. I'll miss that on Monday."
What do you think of the result? Did Richard deserve to go?
