Helen Mirren Tipped To Win Best Actress At Olivier Awards 2013


Things are heating up for the Olivier Awards ceremony which will be held in London tonight. The bash celebrates the best of British theatre and is set to be a star studded night, with Dame Helen Mirren tipped for greatness once again.

Dame Mirren is currently performing in smash hit play The Audience where she is reviving her already award winning performance as HRH the Queen. The play is about the Queen’s weekly audiences with prime ministers and Mirren has wowed audiences and has gathered five nominations.

Dr Who’s Billie Piper is battling Mirren for the Best Actress award for her performance in The Effect, a play which saw Piper have to strip off on stage and deals with the world of pharmaceutical drugs.

X Men’s James McAvoy is up for a Best Actor award for playing Macbeth, but he has some stiff competition from bookies favourite, Luke Treadaway, who is starring in the stage adaptation of the bestselling book The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time.

Curious Incident, a story about a boy with Asperger’s Syndrome, is leading the way at the award ceremony with eight nominations including Best New Play and Best Director. The play has received glowing reviews and the whole run is practically sold out already!

Also up for awards are St Trinians star Rupert Everett for The Judas Kiss and Timothy Spall’s son Rafe Spall who stars in Constellations.

Pop star Will Young is also nominated for an award for his amazing performance in the West End show Cabaret.

The Olivier Awards were first held in 1976 and take place at Covent Garden's Royal Opera House. This years's presenters are Downton Abbey's Hugh Bonneville and Johnathan Creek actress Sheridan Smith.
