2007: Instrumental
When John Lewis returned to TV advertising after a three-year absence, this £6m campaign was a huge hit - without using a major pop singer for its soundtrack.

2008: Unknown professional singers
This £5.5m campaign featured a cover of a Beatles track, sung by several professionals including John Lewis' own Systems Manager, Matthew Spinner.

2009: Taken By Trees
Folk act Taken By Trees took on Guns'N'Roses classic 'Sweet Child O' Mine' for the 2009 campaign, which again cost over £5m altgether. Christmas sales at John Lewis reportedly shot up by 12.7% year-on-year.

2010: Ellie Goulding
In the year of her Critics' Choice win at the Brit Awards, Ellie Goulding was tasked with Elton John's 'Your Song' - and took it to No2 in the UK charts; her most successful single until her dance anthem 'Burn' this last summer.

2011: Slow Moving Millie
The Smiths' 'Please Please Let Me Get What I Want' was covered by Slow Moving Millie for the emotional 2011 campaign - which had the world in tears when it debuted. It passed the 1 million views mark on YouTube on the day of its release.

2012: Gabrielle Aplin
G'Aplin scored a No1 hit when her cover of this Frankie Goes To Hollywood classic was used on the snowman-based ad last year. The campaign helped to pass £800m in sales.

2013: Lily Allen
As premiered earlier today, Lily Allen marks a return to music with her cover of Keane's 'Somewhere Only We Know' on a 2D animation about a bear who usually hibernates through Christmas.
