After five years of marriage, Hollywood power-couple Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise have issued a statement confirming that they’re splitting up and will be getting a divorce.

Katie’s lawyer Jonathan Wolfe has said "This is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family."

He added, "Katie's primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter's best interest." 

It is not yet known why the couple have decided to separate although sources say that their marriage had been in trouble for a while.

Tom hit the headlines earlier today following bizarre claims that he’s been following a skin care regime based on bird poo.

The pair’s marriage was dogged by controversy. Both Tom and Katie practice Scientology, and it is alleged that when daughter Suri was born, Katie was forbidden from making sounds during labour in accordance with the religion.

The couple married in an Italian castle in 2006.

As well as being Dad to four year old Suri, Tom has two children from his previous marriage to Nicole Kidman.
