Lorde Beats James Arthur To Claim Her First Number One Single

James Arthur has been beaten to the top of the singles charts by new teenager pop sensation Lorde.

The former X Factor winner had to settle for the number two slot after he was pipped to the post by the 16-year-old, who has landed her first number one single with her debut song Royal.

Speaking to the OfficialCharts.com, she said: “I'm so incredibly stoked about being Number 1 this week and very grateful to all the UK fans who bought Royals!”

The artist has already topped the Billboard chart in the US and is the youngest solo artist to go straight in at Number 1 on the Official Singles Chart since 15-year-old Billie hit the top spot with Because We Want To in 1998.

And second place is not too shabby for Arthur, who has been heavily promoting his single You’re Nobody ’Til Somebody Loves You, his first release since his winner’s single Impossible spent two weeks at Number 1 over Christmas and New Year.

One Republic’s Counting Stars, which was number one last week, dropped to number three and Katy Perry climbed up two places to four with her single Roar as her new album Prism topped the Official Albums Chart.

Another X Factor band, Union J, went in at number eight with their second single Beautiful Life, their second top ten hit after their debut single Carry You peaked at Number 6 in June.

Rapper Eminem came in at 22 with Survival, his third track to make the Top 40 from his forthcoming album The Marshall Mathers LP , which is released on November 5.

Not so good news for Justin Bieber, however, whose song Hold Tight -  the latest track from the Canadian star’s Music Mondays project – entered the chart at Number 28.
