It was recently announced that Mariah Carey was joining the judging panel on the new series of American Idol even though hubby Nick Cannon had long proclaimed they "couldn't afford" her. We're sure the reported offer of a cool $18 million dollar paycheck soon changed his mind!
In an interview with Extra earlier this year, Carey was asked about what she thought of Britney Spears becoming a Judge on X Factor USA, to which she responded: "I don't care whose going on what show, as long its not me!” Bit awkward Mariah, considering you've now signed up to judge on one of the biggest talent shows in America
Since Simon Cowell and Paula Abdul left the show, it's not surprising the show has taken somewhat of a nose dive in popularity, being overtaken by bigger shows like X Factor and The Voice. Throughout the various seasons, they've introduced guest judges in an attempt to bolster the ratings but it is hoped the addition of mega star Mariah Carey will go a long way to regaining some of its former glory.
But how will Mariah get on with Randy Jackson who is the last remaining judge who has presided over every single season so far like an old headmaster watching his students come and go. With Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler out, will Mariah form a close bond with the veteran judge?
This isn't the first time Carey has been linked to American Idol, back in the seventh series she was brought in as a guest judge and was apparently a nightmare to work with. According to TMZ, a source said Carey was a huge diva, late for her photo shoot at the Beverly Hills Hotel and was rude to staff and crew. Hopefully it's all water under the bridge now, and studio bosses will let bygones be bygones because if anyone can inject some star power into the show, it's surely Mariah!
Most people will no doubt tune into the 12th series of American Idol hoping to catch a glimpse of Carey in full Diva swing, but at the end of the day no one's doubting Carey's abilities as a performer, she's had an incredibly successful music career and most of the people who come onto American Idol often cite Carey as a musical inspiration and hope to emulate her success so that's got to count for something!
