Nas has revealed how his bitter divorce from R&B singer Kelis, has led to his current money problems.
The 38-year-old has opened up about his four-year relationship with the singer, which ended in an ugly divorce in 2009 causing the pair to battle it out over spousal support payments over their three-year-old son, Knight.
"Life is crazy. I wound up paying more money to baby mommas than what some of my rap brothers and sistrens make," he told MTV News.
The New York rapper said that he was dragged through the mud by Kelis and her attorneys in court, and was milked by his ex-wife when the judge bumped up his monthly child support payments from, $40,000 to $51,000 a month, which means the rapper now pays more than $600,000 a year in child support.
He later added: "I’ve always been away from too much limelight and that right there put me in your… No one’s exempt from people probing into your life once you get into the game. So it put a lot of my business out there, man. It was like, people weren’t thinking I was making that kind of money, and now they knew."
Nas later went on to talk about how he regrets how people found out about his money problems dating back to 2010, when reports first serfaced of the rapper owing more than $3.3 million to the IRS, and was forced to admit that he was unable to keep up with his child support payments.
"I was always low key with it in a lot of ways. It was hard with people being all in your business, and it was just ugly. Divorce can be crazy."
Nas then went on to offer a bit of advice for married couples, saying: "Man, if you’re happy… Love is a beast, man. Hold on. Be prepared for any way it may go, and be honest."
