Is Nicki Minaj, our favourite Barbie, getting too big for her boots?
There’s no doubt that Nicki Minaj has been creating headlines in the past few weeks, especially since the highly-anticipated release of her new sophomore album Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, but is her alter-ego spiralling out of control?
According to Billboard, Minaj spends too much time speaking through her alter-egos on the album, which leaked on March 28 ahead of its April 3 release date, and consequently loses herself in the process. As if the negative reviews weren't bad enough, Nicki has been attracting attention in other areas too.
The ‘Starships’ singer recently blasted an interviewer, who questioned her on the criticism she has received for her 'turning her back on hip-hop' in favour of a pop-sound. Nicki responded angrily to the claims, saying: "No, who’s said that? My fans haven’t said that. Who cares about the critics?"
Nicki has also refused to tone down her sexy image for children, despite claiming that she doesn’t want to be a bad role model. The Queens, NY native was forced to apologise for her wardrobe malfunction last year when her breast popped out on live TV, however she defends her choice of attire by saying: "I’ve always been kind of racy. Don’t expect me to change."
In news more closer to home, Nicki’s father claims that the singer "exaggerated" her recollection of his violence against her mother. The rapper revealed in a recent interview that she grew up in an abusive household where she used to "wish her father was dead."
She claims: "We were afraid for my mother’s life, because whenever he would have a real bad outburst, he would threaten to kill her. I wanted to kill him."
However, Omar refutes this and says he never threatened her mother’s life, and had no idea Nicki ‘hated’ him that much, as well as being ‘crushed’ that she decided to reveal details of their private life.
Most recently, Nicki’s loyal followers were distraught to learn that the 29-year old deleted her Twitter account over a public spat with a fan who leake tracks from her latest album.
Miss Minaj was not impressed however, promptly writing during her rant: "And that’s exactly why I’m paying the barbz DUST right now! And deleting my twitter. Smdh - don’t cry for me argentina."
"Like seriously, its but so much a person can take. Good f***ing bye," she tweeted, before then deleting her account.
Nicki, why snub the fans that pushed Roman Reloaded to number one on the Billboard charts?
According to Perez Hilton, "It seems our little Mistress of manic needs to take a breather before she starts turning her fans into all those haters she despises so much…"
Let’s not forget the Nicki we grew fond of in her early days fresh from being signed to Lil Wayne’s label, where she caught our attention with her edgy and witty rap lyrics and bold style. However, as the years have gone by and she has progressed musically, it’s evident that the singer has become much more daring, outspoken and experimental.
But can this be viewed in a negative light? Is Nicki getting too big for her boots and allowing her ego to get the better of her?
