Appearing on the Ellen DeGeneres Show, Ryan admitted that there has been "tension" between the two divas. He added:
"I have no idea what it's going to be like when we go live, which is sort of the exciting part of that."
However, the host who has seen a selection of American Idol judges come and go, insisted that Nicki and Mariah have made the effort to get on with each other.
He said: "I think that they're both trying to make for a great show and find great talent on the show.
"So there will be moments that I'm sure we cannot predict."
Judges aside, Ryan was keen to express his happiness over the quality of the talent. Talking to Ellen, Ryan said: "There's some great talent. The girls are really good this year so the guys have got to step up."
