Could These Rejected Songs Have Saved Britney Spears' Last Album?

A couple of demos that Dev Hynes sent to Britney Spears' HQ for possible inclusion on her 8th studio album have emerged online.

Hynes, aka Blood Orange, is a real staple of the indie-pop scene, having written with Solange and Sky Ferreira in the past. The songs are a little left-field compared to what eventually did end up on the Britney Jean LP, and fans seem unanimous in wondering why they were binned in favour of the critically panned material that did make the cut.

The producer and songwriter previously told The Guardian of the experience: “They’d always come back with why they didn’t like it and it wouldn’t make any sense. I’d almost prefer them to say: ‘We’re scared we’re not going to make any money so we’re just going to use'. It’s funny – the people in charge of a lot of these artists... I don’t want to say they’re not real people, but it’s not a fan sensibility. I feel like that’s what makes the best music, when people are a fan of the person they’re working with.”

Though it earned respectable sales and achieved a Top 5 peak in the US, Britney Jean failed by some distance to meet the high bar set by the rest of Britney’s back catalogue. It failed to yield a Top 10 single, with lead track ‘Work B***h’ halting at No12 and ‘Perfume’ stumbling around the bottom end of the Hot 100. While the former found a No7 peak in the UK, the album only made it as far as the bottom end of the Top 40.

More Britney news:

Brit is undeterred, though - her Vegas residency is going swimmingly with record-breaking ticket sales and critical acclaim, and she’s already confirmed that she’s begun slowly cooking up new music.
