'What Next, Locusts?': Sydney Wakes Up to Blanket of Red Dust

Sydney residents woke up to a blanket of red dirt and patches of “brown rain” on January 24 after dust storms plagued towns in inland New South Wales.

A low-pressure system over the state’s west swept dust and smoke over the city on the Friday morning, forecasters said. Many towns in regional New South Wales and Victoria had experienced blinding dust storms in previous days.

The Bureau of Meteorology forecast that storms would continue through most of the Friday, bringing hail and rain to parts of the city. The rainfall, combined with dust and smoke in the atmosphere, led to reports of “brown rain” in some areas.
