Plans for the next stage of a new housing development in a Cambridgeshire town have been unveiled. It follows as a planning application was put forward by Barratt David Wilson Homes.

The proposals would see up to 1,000 homes built on land south east of London Road in Chatteris. The development also includes provisions for a new primary school, a local centre, open space, and playing fields.

An outline application for the project was given the green light in December 2020. This phase involves detailed matters of the appearance, landscaping and layout for up to 245 of the homes on the site.

The development will be split into four phases, with the application referring to the first and parts of the second. This includes access off London Road, the road network provided to land for the primary school and the first length of the link connecting London Road to Ireton's Way.

The homes on this phase will involve a mixture of open market and affordable properties. Housing sizes and types would range from two-bedroom, three-bedroom, four-bedroom and five-bedroom houses, along with one-bed maisonettes.

A design and access statement from the applicants said: "The site provides an excellent opportunity for a development which not only integrates well with Chatteris, but also brings forward the role of the town as a 'stepping stone' envisaged in the Structure Plan, providing a vital link between the Cambridge sub-region and other Fenland towns.

"This can be achieved by providing quality housing, extending community facilities, employment provision and by providing access to open space and the wider countryside.

"Development to the south east of Chatteris will provide a sustainable, high quality urban extension, which will make a significant contribution to the economic and social needs of the area whilst retaining and enhancing the site's environmental and cultural heritage assets.

A decision on the reserved matters application will be made by Fenland District Council at a later date. To view the plans in full, visit the council's planning portal, using the reference F/YR24/0952/RM or click here.
