The next generation of gaming is now a big step closer, as Microsoft has revealed both the name and the design of the next Xbox console, previously known as Project Scarlett.
In the most surprising moment of last night's The Game Awards, it was announced that Microsoft's next-gen machine will be called Xbox Series X.
If you thought the name was surprising, just take a look at what the machine actually looks like:
Reinforcing the notion that games consoles are turning more and more into specialised PCs, the Xbox Series X looks more like a tower you'd hook up a monitor to and have in a home office rather than a living room TV. Microsoft has stated that you can position the system horizontally or vertically.
The console also comes with a slightly redesigned controller, that brings over the improved directional pad from the Elite range, and it adds a share button too. Since saving screenshots and videos was very clunky on Xbox One, this is a small but much-appreciated addition. You can even get these new pads on PC and Xbox One.

Microsoft has stated that the system will be able to support 8K resolution, 120 frames per second, and all of this fancy ray tracing and solid state drive technology everyone has been banging on about. It will be backwards compatible with Xbox One games and the 360/OG Xbox games available on the One.
The Xbox Series X will arrive in the holiday season next year with Halo: Infinite as a launch title, while Microsoft announced Senua's Saga: Hellblade II from Ninja Theory, a studio it now owns (so don't expect it on PS5).
