Auston Matthews explains why Leafs ditched casual dress code

While Auston Matthews and his Toronto Maple Leafs teammates enjoyed the business casual dress code they had experimented with to start the season, there’s a good reason for why they recently returned to the traditional suit-and-tie style for games.

In an interview with Sportsnet’s Christine Simpson, Matthews said the team chose to nix the dress code after a four-game losing streak in mid-October.

Players were mixing in some fun to their gameday outfits, wearing flashy shirts and sneakers to go with their blazers. But the change was quickly reversed, as the Leafs — a superstitious bunch just like seemingly all hockey players — attributed their poor form to their new dress code.

Toronto is back on track since then, sporting a 10-2-0 record since Oct. 27.

“That’s why we’ve been winning,” Matthews joked with Simpson.

The 24-year-old sniper is notorious for his fashion sense, and took advantage of his team’s revamped dress code to rock some fresh pre-game fits.

As much fun as it was, Matthews and the Leafs are happy to give up some creative freedom if it means continuing to pile up wins.

“I don’t mind wearing a suit. It’s really not an issue,” he said. “But obviously, it’d be fun to explore and wear some different things.”
