Carol Doey has been writing and performing her hilarious comedy shows for years in rural Cookstown, Co Tyrone. But now Belfast audiences are to get a taste of her latest side-splitting work as her new play The Last Leg has made the bill at the Lyric.

The show has already had rave reviews and promises to make you "laugh 'til the tears run down your legs!"

Speaking to Carol ahead of its launch on June 6, she told Belfast Live: "I'm still gobsmacked. I can't take it in. Conor Grimes made it happen - he came to see it and there were a couple of scouts from Belfast.

"I couldn't believe it so I asked they other girls and they did somersaults. One of the girls said 'this is my dream to be in the Lyric so they were all excited too. I'm sitting here waiting for somebody to phone us the night before and say they were only joking.

"I swear to God in heaven I honestly can't believe it... for us rural folk to get to the Lyric in the big city, it's just unbelievable.

Carol says the play is based in the time after lockdown and follows four women of 70 "who have been going on a weekend holiday once a year" and didn't get away during lockdown.

She says while it isn't about her time with friends, those trips did inspire her play.

"Everything in that play is true," she added. "We didn't get out for two years, it was like being in a jail of your own.

"After lockdown, this was their first weekend away so they imagined they were going to go and it would be like the last time - and they would have great craic, a few drinks out and to bingo or whatever, but it doesn't happen that way so they start talking about the past.

"It's a dark comedy and is peppered with some very serious stuff... what happens when you are old... the loneliness of it and things that happen to your body. It's hilariously funny in parts and you be drawn back a wee bit. They are on the last leg, they're not coming into the world they are coming out of it."

The Last Leg, which was written by Carol and is directed by Tony Mc Gurk, is showing in the Lyric Belfast from Thursday June 6 until Sunday June 9 2024. Tickets are available here.
