Love Island viewers have been left baffled by the mysterious disappearance of popular contestant Niall Aslam, which producers simply put down to “personal reasons.”

And while fans have been speculating as to why the 23-year-old quit the show, it seems that it could be due to his reported battle with “insecurities” which stemmed from having his ears pinned back last year.

“Niall left for personal reasons regarding himself only. He doesn't deal well with stress or criticism, and would hate to have situations where he's involved in conflict publicised,” a source told MailOnline.

“It's an emotionally stressful environment and he over worries to the point where he gets stressed.”

The insider added: “Before he got his ears pinned back, if anyone wasn't interested in him or made a joke he'd assume it was about his ears and put a hat on for the rest of the day just to avoid people seeing.”

Niall, who was coupled up with drama student Georgia Steel at the time of his departure, shocked fans with his sudden exit on Tuesday, which appeared to be glossed over by producers.

Sources suggest that he left the Spanish villa after falling ill, with an insider telling The Sun: “Duty of care is the most important consideration on shows like this and as soon as he felt unwell, ITV would have had a discussion with him about leaving.

“The decision they took would have been taken between all parties with Niall's health being the only consideration.”

Dr Alex George broke the news of his departure to the contestants, saying: “For personal reasons unfortunately he can’t continue or come back to the villa.”

Speaking in the Beach House Georgia said: “Obviously I was coupled up with him so I came closer to him than most people in here but it wasn’t just that. He was actually my friend, my buddy.”

Alex later said: “I’m obviously sad that Niall’s left the Villa. We got on really, really well. He’s such a great guy.”
