Nick Boles: Johnson Cabinet 'is most far right government we've ever had’

Independent MP Nick Boles said the Conservatives have been ‘taken over by the hard right’ after Boris Johnson announced his Cabinet yesterday.

Speaking on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme Boles, who quit the Tories after his plans for a softer Brexit were rejected in Parliament, warned the party was 'morphing into the Brexit Party'.

'What it establishes beyond all doubt is that the Conservative Party has now been fully taken over, top to bottom, by the hard right,' Boles said on Thursday morning.

'And those few elements remaining of the one nation, liberal conservative Cameron-style conservative, they are neutered captives in this Cabinet.'

It comes as Mr Johnson chairs the first meeting this morning of a cabinet which he claimed would 'represent modern Britain'.

He is set to address MPs for the first time as Prime Minister in a Commons statement after he concludes the meeting.

Further middle-ranking and junior ministerial appointments are expected but the final Cabinet attendee was announced on Thursday.

During a brutal cabinet overhaul yesterday Mr Johnson axed 17 of Theresa May’s former senior ministers.

Sajid Javid was appointed Chancellor, Dominic Raab came in as Foreign Secretary and Priti Patel was made Home Secretary.

SNP MP Pete Wishart branded the new cabinet ‘one that Donald Trump or Nigel Farage would be proud of’.

Among those departing their posts were Mr Johnson’s opponent in the leadership race Jeremy Hunt.

He confirmed he was quitting after not being offered the role of Foreign Secretary.
