Singer Nick Cave has revealed he is rooting for Luca Bish on Love Island, after the contestant's family helped him through the loss of his son.

The star's son Arthur died in 2015 at the age of 15, after falling from a cliff in Brighton.

Cave has now posted a long message on his blog The Red Hand Files saying that Arthur and his twin, Earl, went to school with Bish and that his parents "are as good as people get".

He opened up after a fan asked him what the “major difference” was between him and his wife Susie.

The musician, 64, said right now the difference between them was that Susie was watching the ITV dating show and he wasn't.

He explained: "Susie watches Love Island because we know one of the contestants, Luca. Luca was a school friend of our twins, Arthur and Earl. As a consequence, Susie and I became friends with Luca’s parents, Maria and Michael. Maria is an antique dealer. Michael is a fishmonger. Luca is a fishmonger too."

Cave said in the "early days of that terrible, chaotic first week" after Arthur died, Maria turned up on their doorstep and looked after them.

"She barely said anything to us," he said. "She made us cups of tea. She cooked for us. She was just there.

"She was the one constant through a time of horror and confusion, when scores of despairing and commiserating people came and went."

"We will never forget her kindness," he said.

"Even in the first week, when the world seemed suddenly and shockingly defined by an unspeakable and distorting cruelty, Maria reminded us that there was good in the world."

Cave said Bish's mum also served as a lesson in how to deal with grieving people.

"You don’t need to say anything, just do something; make them a cup of tea, cook them dinner," he said.

The star said Bish's dad still brings them fresh fish and "pretends to charge us for it" even though he doesn't really.

"These people, Luca’s parents, are as good as people get, and they love their son, Luca," he said.

"So, Susie watches Love Island and cheers him on, and hopes that he will win. I also hope that Luca wins, and wins soon, because then I can get the f****** TV back."

This year's series of the reality show has attracted accusations of misogyny, with claims that females are shamed for sexual encounters, while men are glorified for the same behaviour.

Earlier this week, Bish's family apologised for his behaviour, apparently over the way he reacted to Gemma Owen talking to another contestant.

They said: "I know that when he watches it back, he will be embarrassed and deeply apologetic. We as his family don’t condone his behaviour, but we do understand he is in an intense environment where his emotions are heightened. Last night was not reflective of the boy we all know and love at home."

Earlier this year Cave's son Jethro Lazenby died aged 31.
