Is he using one big melting pot? BNP leader Nick Griffin launches cookery show with recipe for 'good standard British fare'

BNP leader Nick Griffin has launched a side-career as a TV chef, after posting a detailed step-by-step guide to cooking a hearty 'British' beef stew.

His bid to become the latest Nigella Lawson or Jamie Oliver saw the MEP dressed in a red, white and blue Help for Heroes rugby shirt, chopping onions and swigging beer in his own Aga-equipped kitchen.

The video - which could be the first of a series if it is well received - was posted just before Christmas on the BNP's YouTube channel and promises cheap and simple recipes 'for beating the Tory blues'.

The recently bankrupt politician begins the thirty-minute episode by explaining the premise behind the show - that BNP members told him their 'wives can't afford to put enough decent food on the table'.

Mr Griffin uses 'traditionally English' root vegetables' and reduced 'British' beef for a one pot stew.

He apologises to more experienced chefs for his simple instructions before telling novice cooks that 'different things take different times to cook' and recommending they 'take the top and bottom off' an onion before peeling it.

The show, which has been viewed 25,000 times, also gives a quick history lesson. At one point he tells viewers that 'English cookery for centuries was the best in Europe" but it "became very simple after the Hanoverians came over from north Germany'.

And the origins of curry are explored when he dismisses the idea that the dish has anything to do with Asia.

The wannabe chef adds: 'Incidentally, the word ‘curry’ first appears anywhere from a cookery book during the reign of, I think it’s Richard II, 13th century."

He adds: 'So don’t let people tell you that you have to have huge numbers of immigrants to have good cooking.'

At the end of the video the beef stew is tasted by BNP members, who declare their approval.

Speaking to the camera, Mr Griffin recommends viewers 'surprise themselves' with the recipe, before saluting the camera with a pint of beer.
