Nicola Sturgeon applies to be SNP candidate for Holyrood election but no final decision has been made
Nicola Sturgeon has submitted an application to be a candidate for the SNP at the next Holyrood election amid speculation she would quit the Parliament. But the former First Minister had not a made decision to stand and could pull out further into the process.
Party bosses set a closing date of November 11th for anyone wanting to run in 2026.
Sturgeon served as First Minister for nine years before standing down in 2023. She faced huge problems toward the end of her career in Bute House, most notably a police investigation into alleged fraud in the SNP.
She had been widely tipped to stand down, but an SNP insider said she had applied. This could be interpreted as Sturgeon keeping all her options open until she makes a final decision.
Sturgeon has been an MSP since 1999 and is currently writing a book about her time in office.
An SNP spokesperson said: “The SNP is lucky to count on a strong and diverse set of candidates. We look forward to offering people the opportunity to vote SNP in 2026 for SNP candidates who will work tirelessly to improve the lives of people across Scotland and for an SNP Scottish Government that provides an alternative to Labour cuts.”
