From Nigel Farage to Beyonce: the shortlist for Time Magazine's Person of the Year 2016

Nigel Farage has made it onto the shortlist for Time Magazine’s 2016 Person of the Year, joining the likes of Donald Trump, Vladimir Putin and Beyonce.

The award recognises the person who most influenced the news – for better or for worse – over the course of a year.

The former UKIP leader was picked out for his role in the Brexit referendum.

The magazine said: “As head of the UK Independence Party, Farage was a face of the successful campaign for Britain to leave the European Union, positioning the referendum as the start of a global populist wave against the political establishment.”

Last year’s winner was German chancellor Angela Merkel.

2016’s person of the year will be announced on Wednesday.
