Former Ukip leader Nigel Farage has reportedly been named as a ‘person of interest’ in the US-counter intelligence investigation that has been tasked with probing links between Russia and Donald Trump’s Presidential campaign.

According to The Guardian, Farage came to the attention of FBI investigators because of his close ties with both the Trump campaign and Wikileaks founder Julian Assange – who he visited at the Ecuadorian Embassy in London earlier this year.

Speaking to The Guardian, a source claimed that Farage’s close links with Trump made him of interest to investigators who are probing whether Russia worked alongside the now-President to influence the 2016 election.

A source said: ‘One of the things the intelligence investigators have been looking at is points of contact and persons involved.

‘If you triangulate Russia, WikiLeaks, Assange and Trump associates the person who comes up with the most hits is Nigel Farage.’

The source also claimed that Farage was scrutinised due to his links with Trump adviser Roger Stone – who previously admitted that he has contacted a Kremlin-linked hacker known as Guccifer 2.0.

At present, there is nothing to suggest that Farage has been accused of wrongdoing and he is not believed to be a direct target of the US investigation.

Dismissing the claims, a spokesperson for Farage said that they were ‘bordering on the hysterical’.

‘Nigel has never been to Russia, let alone worked with their authorities’, the spokesperson said.

It is yet to be established whether Farage is aware of the FBI enquiry.
