The biggest match of the Africa Cup of Nations saw Nigeria emerge victorious over Egypt in Group D.
Kelechi Iheanacho’s goal was enough to see the Super Eagles triumph.
The Leicester City man, alongside Moses Simon and Joe Aribo formed what looked like the best attack of the tournament thus far, which is really rather incredible when taking into account the big names the squad are missing up front.
Egypt, meanwhile, struggled to service their frontline. Without much in the way of a creative passer, a lot of their possession lead to very little, albeit there were signs both the Liverpool star and Aston Villa’s Trezeguet were starting to break behind enemy lines towards the hour mark.
Still, it is Nigeria who make an early statement in the AFCON.

FT: Nigeria 1-0 Egypt
17:56 , Jonathan Gorrie
It’s over!
Brilliant tournament performance from Nigeria who make an early statement in Group D.
CHANCE FOR NIGERIA
17:54 , Jonathan Gorrie
90:00 - After the corner was cleared, Ejuke sees his shot on the counter well-saved.
That would have wrapped it up.
Late Salah show
17:53 , Jonathan Gorrie
90:00 - Troost-Ekong blocks Salah’s shot before Iwobi clears his cross.
Late corner for Egypt.
Off goes Simon
17:52 , Jonathan Gorrie
90:00 - Given a standing ovation, Moses Simon goes off for Alex Iwobi.
Brilliant performance.
The last Egyptian push
17:50 , Jonathan Gorrie
88:00 - Anything for Egypt now really would be a smash and grab of the highest order.
Nigeria sitting back now
17:47 , Jonathan Gorrie
84:00 - Could well be a lack of energy now but Nigeria are largely letting Egypt have the ball.
Their lack of a creative passer is painstakingly obvious but Salah can certainly create something out of nothing.
Ndidi down
17:44 , Jonathan Gorrie
82:00 - Hopefully nothing serious but Ndidi requires attention.
Could well just be cramp.
And off goes Iheanacho
17:42 , Jonathan Gorrie
79:00 - Iheanacho replaced by Nwakali.
A great performance from the Leicester City man but really should have scored more.
Nigeria injury
17:41 , Jonathan Gorrie
78:00 - Omeruo stretchered off after a collision in the box.
Doesn’t look good for him. A real shame. Ajayi on to replace him.
ANOTHER CHANCE FOR NIGERIA
17:38 , Jonathan Gorrie
76:00 - Ejuke sees his shot saved well after a counter.
Will the Super Eagles live to regret missing so many chances?
CHANCE FOR NIGERIA
17:36 , Jonathan Gorrie
74:00 - Egypt ‘keeper El Shenawy all at sea from a corner but his teammates do well to clear.
Would have been a tap in.
Nigeria fans in good sprits
17:34 , Jonathan Gorrie
And who would blame them?
CHANCE FOR EGYPT
17:32 , Jonathan Gorrie
70:00 - Salah just can’t quite control a through ball and is challenged well by Okoye.
CHANCE FOR EGYPT
17:28 , Jonathan Gorrie
66:00 - Salah, though offside, sees his shot blocked.
Still, Egypt are getting behind all too often for Nigeria.
CHANCE FOR NIGERIA
17:27 , Jonathan Gorrie
65:00 - Iheanacho, who should really have a brace to his name, shoots wide from a reasonably tight angle.
Should have done better.
Better spell for Egypt
17:26 , Jonathan Gorrie
63:00 - Long balls they may be but at least Egypt are getting behind enemy lines now.
Fathy does well to round Simon in the box but sees his cross blocked.
A look at the Iheanacho chance...

CHANCE FOR NIGERIA
17:19 , Jonathan Gorrie
57:00 - A poor touch from Iheanacho denies him the chance to shoot at an opening goal.
Not like him at all.
Salah almost in
17:18 , Jonathan Gorrie
55:00 - Here’s the danger.
Troost-Ekong almost loses the ball on the last line after Salah’s pressure.
If anything is going to get Egypt back into the game, you feel it’s got to be something like that.
Consider Mo Salah shut down (so far...)

All Nigeria
17:11 , Jonathan Gorrie
49:00 - Egypt just can’t get out.
Most of the second-half so far has been played in their box with Nigeria getting to the byline before crossing back.
Moses Simon is on fire.
CHANCE FOR NIGERIA
17:10 , Jonathan Gorrie
47:00 - Awoniyi celebrates after a header is saved on the line.
He thinks it crossed it. The ref doesn’t.
Not a great day at the office for Salah so far
17:09 , Jonathan Gorrie
Mohammed Salah just had 14 touches in the first half against Nigeria with none coming in the opposition penalty box.
The Liverpool forward is also yet to have a shot. #AFCON2021 pic.twitter.com/LwyXCI0cji— Owuraku Ampofo (@_owurakuampofo) January 11, 2022

Iheanacho’s goal the difference so far.
Great half from Nigeria with Simon particularly impressive.
Egypt lacking a creative passer
16:49 , Jonathan Gorrie
45:00 - It’s not an issue of having the ball for Egypt, it’s just that they lack a creative passer to break through the lines.
Salah and Trezeguet starved of service.
CHANCE FOR NIGERIA
16:45 , Jonathan Gorrie
43:00 - Simon is SO dangerous.
His cross can’t quite reach a teammate but he’s been the one pulling Egypt apart in the first-half.
Gary Lineker approves
16:43 , Jonathan Gorrie
What a stunning goal from @67Kelechi. Given the @LCFC connection, @NGSuperEagles are definitely my team in Africa Cup of Nations. 👏🏻

CHANCE FOR NIGERIA
16:43 , Jonathan Gorrie
41:00 - Egypt limping along to half-time now.
Iheanacho feeds Awoniyi, who can’t beat the ‘keeper from just of the goal in the box.
A man in form
16:42 , Jonathan Gorrie
🇳🇬 Kelechi Iheanacho has been directly involved in 4 goals in his last 3 games for club & country:

Salah can’t get into the game
16:41 , Jonathan Gorrie
39:00 - It would be foolish to write him off but Salah is so isolated at the moment.
Hard to see a way in for him other than on the counter.
CHANCE FOR NIGERIA
16:40 , Jonathan Gorrie
38:00 - Not known for his goals, Ndidi creates space for a shot on the edge of the box and drags it just wide.
CHANCE FOR NIGERIA
16:39 , Jonathan Gorrie
37:00 - Awoniyi almost in after a through ball from Iheanacho but the pass is slightly overhit.
Egypt giving the ball away in dangerous areas.

Nigeria pushing for a second
16:35 , Jonathan Gorrie
33:00 - Simon and Aribo are so dangerous on the left side, constantly breaking into the box from that channel.
With a striker like Iheanacho around, they’re such a good attacking duo.
GOAL: Nigeria 1-0 Egypt | Kelechi Iheanacho ‘30
16:32 , Jonathan Gorrie
30:00 - Aribo heads to Iheanacho after a Simon cross and the Leicester City man fires a wonderful half-volley into the roof of the net!
Nigeria in the ascendancy
16:30 , Jonathan Gorrie
28:00 - Egypt need to see this out.
Iheanacho, Simon and Aribo can interlink so well on the edge of the box and Egypt have already lost one of their starting defenders. Doing well to take the sting out of the game now, however.
CHANCE FOR NIGERIA
16:27 , Jonathan Gorrie
26:00 - Great chance for Simon after being played in Aribo.
Hits the side netting from a tight angle but best chance so far.
Nigeria now dominating
16:25 , Jonathan Gorrie
24:00 - Not a huge amount in it at the moment but it’s Nigeria’s turn to play the ball around the park somewhat.
Not much in the way of openings emerging.
The ball causing problems
16:24 , Jonathan Gorrie
22:00 - Still a bit cagey, with numerous breaks in play and the like.
The ball is causing problems AGAIN.
Break in play
16:21 , Jonathan Gorrie
19:00 - The ball is being switched over after some complaints from the players.
The game slows
16:20 , Jonathan Gorrie
17:00 - While Nigeria have looked fairly open on the counter, they have built a strong defensive base when Egypt have the ball.
Game is largely being played in front of them at the moment, not causing too many problems.
Egypt building
16:18 , Jonathan Gorrie
16:00 - After sitting back for most of the game so far, Egypt are passing the ball around nicely.
Salah is somewhat isolated but they really do look dangerous when the ball turns over. You feel that players of this quality will get that final ball right, should Nigeria fail to plug the gaps.
CHANCE FOR EGYPT
16:15 , Jonathan Gorrie
13:00 - Salah feeds Trezeguet on the counter but overhits the pass.
Very close to breaching the Nigerian defence there despite defending for large parts.
A tactic, perhaps?
Early sub for Egypt
16:14 , Jonathan Gorrie
11:00 - El Said comes onto replace Tawfik.
Simon causing problems
16:11 , Jonathan Gorrie
09:00 - Moses Simon looking very dangerous early on.
He’s the one causing problems, driving into the box and forcing Egypt to clear, only for it to come back.
Early injury worry for Egypt
16:08 , Jonathan Gorrie
07:00 - A shame for Tawfik, who looks to have twisted his knee.
CHANCE FOR EGYPT
16:07 , Jonathan Gorrie
05:00 - Mostafa Mohamed with his first shot on goal.
From a tight angle, it didn’t trouble the ‘keeper but an early opening.
Egypt looking to settle
16:06 , Jonathan Gorrie
04:00 - Given just how sharp Nigeria’s press has been, Egypt are looking to take the sting out of the game.
Nigeria almost in
16:04 , Jonathan Gorrie
02:00 - Awoniyi presses near the byline and wins a corner.
Lots of energy already even despite Nigeria’s lack of forward options.
Fast start
16:03 , Jonathan Gorrie
01:00 - Not much in the way of changes as you might expect so early but Egypt are looking to press Nigeria well.
Some real quality on show today.

Musa’s AFCON dream
15:04 , Jonathan Gorrie
Nigeria captain Ahmed Musa told BBC Sport he was eager to end his AFCON journey with a win to what would have been a stellar international career.
“There’s the need to give a chance to other young players to come through and play in the tournament,” he said.
“I got my chance as a young player. I’ve fulfilled some childhood memories.”
Why are Nigeria without three key strikers?
14:46 , George Flood
So why are Nigeria without three of their key strikers for this tournament?
Napoli’s Victor Osimhen had to withdraw from the squad after failing to recover from a cheekbone injury sustained playing for Napoli at Inter Milan in late November.
He had looked set to be involved, only to later test positive for Covid-19.
Odion Ighalo - AFCON Golden Boot winner in 2019 - has not been released by Saudi club Al Shabab, while Nigeria have blamed Watford for Emmanuel Dennis’ absence, with the striker critical to the Hornets’ chance of sealing Premier League survival this term.
The Nigerian FA accused Watford of “baring fangs” when they announced Dennis would not be going to the tournament.
Head to head record
14:35 , George Flood
Nigeria wins: 8
Egypt wins: 5
Draws: 5
Salah: I want to be the best player in the world
14:27 , George Flood
The confident Salah also outlined his ambition to be the very best player in the world after only finishing seventh in the race for last year’s Ballon d’Or.
“If you asked me if this was a drive for me to be here? Yeah, of course,” he said.
“I can’t really lie and say honestly I didn’t think about it. No, I think about it. I want to be the best player in the world.
“But I will have a good life even if I don’t win. My life is OK, everything is fine.”
Salah not asking for ‘crazy stuff’ in new Liverpool contract
14:12 , George Flood
Mo Salah has made headlines ahead of Egypt’s opening AFCON contest due to an interview with GQ in which he discussed his demands over a new contract at Liverpool.
Reports have suggested that Salah is looking for a weekly salary worth in excess of £300,000, which would smash the current wage structure at Anfield.
“I want to stay, but it’s not in my hands. It’s in their hands. They know what I want. I’m not asking for crazy stuff,” Salah said.
“The thing is when you ask for something and they show you they can give you something (they should) because they appreciate what you did for the club.
“I’ve been here for my fifth year now. I know the club very well. I love the fans. The fans love me.
“But with the administration, they have (been) told the situation. It’s in their hands.”
Nigeria vs Egypt prediction
14:06 , George Flood
This is the tie of the tournament so far between two sides who will expect to figure in the latter stages.
Having Salah in their ranks is obviously an enormous boost for Egypt, but their supporting cast - not a patch on what he is used to at Liverpool - will need to step up consistently if he is to showcase his best form in Cameroon.
The absences of Dennis, Osimhen and Ighalo are big blows for Nigeria, who may well struggle for goals.
We’re plumping for Egypt to kick off their campaign with a statement victory.
Egypt 2-0 Nigeria.
Egypt team news
14:05 , George Flood
Egypt’s hopes of course lie chiefly with Liverpool superstar Mohamed Salah.
However, left-back Mohamed Hamdi has been ruled out of AFCON with a knee injury and promising young star Ibrahim Adel and goalkeeper Mohamed Abo-Gabal are among those to have tested positive for Covid-19 in the build-up to the tournament.
Nigeria team news
14:03 , George Flood
Nigeria’s hopes of a fourth Africa Cup of Nations crown have been hit by the absences of key forwards Emmanuel Dennis and Victor Osimhen, who remain with Watford and Napoli respectively.
Rangers’ Leon Balogun and Omonia Nicosia’s Shehu Abdullahi also withdrew from Augustine Eguavoen’s 28-man tournament squad, with Henry Onyekuru, Tyronne Ebuehi, Peter Olayinka and West Brom’s Semi Ajayi called up instead.
Nigeria are also missing former Manchester United loanee Odion Ighalo, who was not permitted to leave Saudi Arabian club Al-Shabab as Jamilu Collins was drafted in.

Welcome to Nigeria vs Egypt LIVE coverage!
13:57 , George Flood
Good afternoon and welcome to Standard Sport’s LIVE coverage of what promises to be a cracking showdown between two Group D heavyweights in the Africa Cup of Nations.
No one would be surprised to see Egypt or Nigeria figure prominently in the latter stages of this competition in Cameroon, with the pressure on Liverpool star Mohamed Salah to deliver his country a record-extending eighth AFCON title to banish the memories of that shock last-16 exit on home soil in 2019.
They may fancy their chances of a statement opening win in Garoua, with Nigeria’s attacking resources depleted by the absences of strikers Emmanuel Dennis, Victor Osimhen and Odion Ighalo.
Kick-off is at 4pm GMT, so stay tuned for match build-up, latest team news and live updates!
