Nine Sheffield roads handed new speed limits
Two new 20mph speed limits have been approved for suburbs in Sheffield, with some locals advocating for an additional road to be included as well.
After public consultation, the 20mph zones will be implemented in the Greenland area of Darnall and Brincliffe in Nether Edge. The plans were ratified on Wednesday, November 27 at a Sheffield City Council transport, regeneration and climate policy committee meeting.
The residential area of Greenland includes Industry Road, Phillimore Road, Clipston Road and Fitzmaurice Road. In Brincliffe, the streets involved encompass Wostenholm Road, part of Sharrow Lane and Union Road, Montgomery Road, Osborne Road and Priory Road.

A report presented to the committee revealed that six emails supporting and five objections were received in Greenland, out of 1,498 letters delivered to all residents within the proposed boundary. In Brincliffe, 2,372 residents were consulted via letter, resulting in 154 supportive comments and 26 objections.
Several Brincliffe residents also proposed for Sheldon Road to be made a 20mph zone, a suggestion backed by local councillors. Although the road does not fall within the scheme's boundary, the council has agreed to conduct speed surveys. If it meets the criteria, a consultation on the idea will ensue before a decision is reached.
The report states: "Some Brincliffe residents, including those who support the scheme, have expressed concerns about main roads such as Psalter Lane being included in the scheme.
"These are 'C class' roads and in the council's 20mph speed limit strategy, these are to be considered for inclusion on their own merits. Speed surveys were conducted and all roads had an average speed of under 27mph, which allows their inclusion.
"The police have not expressed any concern with these roads being included and neither have local members and one expressed support for these roads being in the scheme."
Traffic speeds will be monitored in the two areas, and additional measures may be taken if drivers fail to reduce speed.
Set to be assessed for potential 20mph zones where consultations are currently ongoing include Earl Marshall; Loxley/ Walkley; Netherthorpe; and Bradway.
The schemes already set for implementation in 2024/25 include Longley Hall; Beaver Hill; Tapton; and Collegiate.
