Nintendo has provided a very exciting update on the upcoming Super Mario animated movie, revealing it's scheduled for a theatrical release in 2022.

The CGI movie was officially confirmed by Nintendo back in 2018 and it sounds like the project is now moving forward, according to the company's latest Corporate Management Policy Briefing.

The movie is being co-produced by Nintendo's Representative Director Shigeru Miyamoto, who created Mario, with the founder and CEO of Illumination studio Chris Meledandri also working on the film.

Illumination is behind the Despicable Me and Minions movies, so it seems that the character is in experienced hands. Universal Pictures will be distributing the movie.

Nintendo has promised that the company is "actively involved in planning, development and production" of the project and has also said that further "visual content expansion projects" are being worked on, although these may not be Mario related.

No further details about the untitled Mario movie have been released yet, but it's never too early to start getting excited.

Nintendo also recently announced that selected classic Mario games are coming to the Switch for a limited time only.

Old favourites Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine and Super Mario Galaxy – which were originally released on the Nintendo 64, GameCube and Wii respectively – have been repackaged together as Super Mario 3D All-Stars.

The classic games will come with beefed-up graphics and upgraded performance. There's only a couple of days left until you can get your hands on Super Mario 3D All-Stars, as it will be released on Friday (September 18).
