Nintendo is launching a smaller, stripped down console called Wii Mini, which could cost as little as £60.

The console is to launch in Canada before Christmas, priced at 99 Canadian dollars.

A company spokesperson told Yahoo! that Nintendo had 'no information' about a launch in other territories.

The machine has no internet connection - used for some of Wii's TV functions - and will not play old GameCube games, unlike Wii itself.

Nintendo confirmed the existence of Wii Mini after details were leaked by online retailers in Canada.

"Wii Mini is designed exclusively to play Wii games. Its family-friendly design has no Internet capabilities and does not play Nintendo GameCube games," the company said in an official release.

"It’s a great value for first-time Wii owners who just want to jump in and experience all the great Wii games that helped usher in a revolution in motion-controlled gaming. Wii games are available at a variety of price points for every kind of shopper."

Nintendo is to launch its new 'Wii U' console this Friday in the UK. The hi-def console will cost £250.

The Wii U uses an iPad-style 6.2-inch touchscreen as the controller, and lets players play games on the controller's screen, on TV, or a mix of both.

The one-pound GamePad also works as a remote control for televisions, with the console delivering online TV services such as Netflix and YouTube.
