Police have dismissed rumours that a knifepoint robbery took place on a Sainsbury's car park. Social media reports suggested that a man was mugged outside the Biddulph supermarket over the weekend.

Now officers have confirmed that no such crime took place at the Wharf Road site after trawling through CCTV at the time the incident was alleged to have taken place.

A Staffordshire Police spokesman said: "We’ve seen lots of comments online about an alleged knifepoint robbery on a car-park in Biddulph over the weekend, which we can confirm are false. Social media reports have suggested a man was robbed at knifepoint by two men on Sainsbury’s car-park on Wharf Road.

"Local officers have carried out a trawl of CCTV at the time the robbery was reported to have happened and found no evidence of any incident taking place, neither has anyone come forward as a victim.

"We know this post has gained a lot of traction locally and we’d like to reiterate that extensive enquiries have been carried out and nothing has been reported to us."
