Tyne and Wear Metro operator Nexus has announced there will be no trains between South Gosforth and North Shields next weekend, to allow for works to be carried out at Whitley Bay.

Rail replacement buses will run in operation on the weekend of November 9-10 and a revised timetable will be in operation for the rest of the Metro network.

The works come off the back of another major line closure, after no trains ran between Gateshead Stadium and South Hylton and South Shields last week to allow for a full replacement of Pelaw junction. Nexus Major Projects Director Paul Welford called the works a "once in a generation effort."

There was also disruption on the Shields Ferry this morning, with the service starting six hours later than usual due to crew availability.
