No-nonsense Eddie Howe sends brutal warning to Newcastle stars after behind the scenes call

For all the talk of Newcastle United's underwhelming summer transfer window, Eddie Howe turned to his squad depth to enact change in Sunday's 2-1 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers.

United, on the back foot at the business end of the first-half and trailing at the break, were in need of a change. Indeed, it came swiftly with just shy of £120million's worth of talent being introduced in one fell swoop as Howe made three substitutions during the half-time interval.

There is major competition for places in this side now - just what Howe wants - and the Newcastle boss has no problem whatsoever reminding his current crop that if they don't perform, there are options champing at the bit behind them, waiting to take their place on the pitch.

"I wasn't totally satisfied, especially with the last 25 minutes and a half," Howe told Sky Sports at full-time. "We've got quality players on the bench and the lads that are playing know that they have to perform.

"If you don't perform to the correct levels, then we have the ability to make those changes. You have to credit the players that came on they showed their qualities.

"I mean Harvey's goal is outstanding. A brilliant moment and he's done that a few times for us. So I'm delighted with the squad. Everyone played their part and it's a massive win."

Heading into Sunday's clash, a number of tough calls needed to be made by Howe behind the scenes.

Should Lloyd Kelly or Lewis Hall get the nod at left-back? Is Sandro Tonali ready for his first league start after 180 minutes of football for Italy? Who should accompany Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon in Newcastle's front three?

After another lacklustre start to a top flight clash, Howe wasted no time changing his mind on some of those decisions he had made pre-match. Barnes and Tonali were introduced, along with Joe Willock, and ultimately helped swing the game in Newcastle's favour, eventually.

Barnes' thunderous winner will again lead to added clamour for him to get an extended run in the starting XI going forward. It would be remarkable if Tonali is not in from the outset against Fulham at the weekend.

These are positive headaches for Howe to have, especially after a summer of failing to strengthen his first-team on Tyneside.
