Pitch Perfect 3 will sadly be the last of the Bellas "as we know them".

The third instalment of the a cappella movie franchise wrapped filming with all the current Barden Bellas last month.

The film reunites the series' current Bella clan and will also introduce new cast members in the form of Academy Award nominee John Lithgow, 90210's Matt Lanter and OITNB star Ruby Rose.

However – it looks like this is the last time we'll see the original Bellas in action.

"I think it's the end of the Bellas as we know them," screenwriter Kay Cannon told E! Online.

"If there's a Pitch Perfect 4, it will be a new crop."

During the interview, Cannon also revealed that stars such as Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson already know they won't be returning for a fourth instalment.

"I think [the current Bellas] just know," she added.

"I had the feeling when I visited set, it was like they were full of tears and like, 'how much longer can we be singing a cappella?'

"I think that people will cry."

Pitch Perfect 3 is coming to cinemas later this year. However, the third instalment definitely hasn't been without its setbacks.

First, there was the devastating news that Skylar Astin and the rest of the Trebles wouldn't be returning for the third movie.

Secondly, the movie's release date was pushed back a whole five months, which made us even more anxious – and then we had to come to terms with the fact that it would not be directed by Elizabeth Banks.

Stepping in to replace Banks though is OK Go music video extraordinaire Trish Sie.

Sie co-directed the band's iconic music videos 'Upside Down & Inside Out' and 'Here It Goes Again' so we reckon the franchise is in safe hands.

Pitch Perfect 3 will be in cinemas December 22, 2017.
