A village shop and tea room that was previously told to improve its hygiene standards has regained its five star rating.

Coopers of Elwick Shop and Tea Room were given a score of two out of a possible five when Food Standards Agency (FSA) inspectors visited the premises on August 15. However, after a re-inspection on October 1, the café, on The Green, in Elwick, Hartlepool , was given the overall rating of ‘very good’.

“We did immediately regain our five star rating as fully expected and normal service has been resumed,” the owner of the eatery told Teesside Live.

The FSA website shows the standards found at the time of inspection. The area of hygienic food handling was rated as ‘very good’ as well as the cleanliness and condition of facilities and building.

The management of food safety was given a ‘good’ standard. Coopers of Elwick describes itself as a “small village shop and tea room bringing a much missed service back to the village and more, with teas, coffees and cakes, and seating out back to catch up with friends or just to hang out”.

Speaking last week, the owner stated that the ‘problem’s at the first visit had been rectified’. They said: “The majority of the problems were minor structural problems which have been rectified. We have had a constant five star rating since we opened over five years ago and we intend to regain that rating next week.”
