Norris Dam Opens Spillway Gates After Record Rainfall in Tennessee

Norris Dam in Andersonville, Tennessee, opened its spillway gates on Monday, February 25, after heavy rainfall caused water levels to rise to more than 10 feet above normal.

Tennessee Valley Authority tweeted that Norris Dam would store 305 billion gallons of water to protect downstream communities after a record month of rainfall caused an increase of 26 feet from lake level in three weeks.

The National Weather Service said on Sunday that conditions were expected to dry out for several days. Credit: Tennessee Valley Authority via Storyful
