North Circular crash: Over £6k raised for police officers fighting for lives as donations flood in from well-wishers

More than £6,000 has been raised in just four hours for two police officers who are fighting for lives in hospital following a serious crash in north London.

The two officers, who are both aged in their 30s and based in the Brent borough, were struck by a car whilst on duty in the early hours of Sunday morning.

They were returning to their marked vehicle on the North Circular Road near Brent Park when the car ploughed into them at 3.40am.

Brent Police said the officers were taken to the resuscitation department at north London hospital and remained in critical condition.

The Go Fund Me page to raise money was started on Sunday and was shared widely on social media.

It surpassed its initial goal of £2,500 and by 5pm had raised £6,000.

Friends of the officers, who created the fundraising effort, wrote: "This is the season of good will and giving, so please dig deep and give as much or as little as you can afford.

“Every little donation, will I’m sure, be greatly received by our friends who will need considerable support for sometime into the future.”

On Sunday, Met Police commissioner Cressida Dick issued a statement saying the crash was a "stark reminder" of the risks that police officers face every day.

"My thoughts and prayers are with my officers, and their families, as they remain seriously injured in hospital," she said. "I, and their whole police family in the Met, hope they make a full and speedy recovery.

“It is incidents such as this that act as a stark reminder of the uncertainties of police work and the dangers that officers’ face every day when they put on their uniforms or start their shifts to go and help the public.

“These officers were helping their colleagues respond to another incident when they were struck by a car.Police officers are trained to respond to horrific incidents such as that, but to do so knowing that it is your colleagues who are in need of help takes the utmost professionalism.

Thanks to all the officers and emergency services who rushed to attend and all the medical staff who continue to care for my officers. “

A spokesperson for Scotland Yard said: “The male officer sustained serious injuries; we await a further update as to his condition.

"The female officer sustained a number of fractures. Her condition is described as serious but stable."

The driver of the white Maserati car involved in the accident is aged in his 50s and stopped at the scene. A woman who was in the car with him also sustained Injuries.

Police have arrested the man on suspicion of dangerous driving and for failing to provide a breath specimen.

"The woman who had been in the car, aged in her 40s, remains in hospital. She was not seriously injured."
