North Circular flooding: Motorists rescued from their cars and locals left without water as torrent gushes from burst pipe

Stranded drivers were rescued from their cars after one of north London's busiest roads flooded due to a burst water pipe.

Footage shared on social media shows cars driving through a torrent water gushing across the North Circular at the Brent Cross interchange in north west London on Monday afternoon at around 3.30pm.

A spokesperson for the London Fire Brigade told the Standard that eight people got stuck in their cars and had to be pulled free. No injuries were reported. The fire brigade said the flood was under control by around 8pm.

People in north-west London complained of being without water or with low water pressure following the incident.

Thames Water, which operates the 24-inch pipe, said in a statement: "We’re sorry to anyone who has been disrupted by flooding, road closures or low water pressure due to a burst pipe on the North Circular Road. We know this has happened at an especially difficult time and understand the concerns our customers may have.

“Our engineers are on site and working with the fire service to pump away the water. They’ll then be able to start work to repair the pipe. We’ll work through the night to get things up and running as quickly as possible.

“Getting water supplies back on is our top priority and water is returning in the affected areas. While our experts work on this we’re identifying everyone in area who has pre-registered with us as having special requirements, such as being medically reliant on water, so we can get in touch and make sure we give them the help and support they need."

A spokesperson for the Met police added: “Police were called to the A406 near Brent Cross Shopping Centre, at about 15:30hrs on Monday, 6 July to reports of flooding.

“Officers attended along with the London Fire Brigade. The carriageway was found to be flooded, believed to be due to a burst water main. Road closures have been put in place. There are no reported injuries.”

Local MP Barry Gardiner warned people against using the North Circular on Monday evening.

He said on Twitter: "To all my constituents travelling home this evening intending to use the North Circular. Please be aware of the flooding at the Brent Cross intersection".
