An MP in Cornwall has said "enough is enough" after a fatal crash at a notorious junction on the A30 today. Police confirmed that a woman died at the scene of a two-vehicle crash near Launceston this morning, Thursday, November 7.

Liberal Democrat MP for North Cornwall, Ben Maguire, has offered condolences to the family of a woman who died on the A30 earlier today. MP Ben Maguire said: “My thoughts are with the families at this time, who must be going through a very difficult period.

“Enough is enough. There has been a record of failure for too long on this issue, and now, more than ever, we need to come together to solve this accident blackspot.

“We need a graded junction, and we need to get everyone around the table to find a long-term solution. Having written to local residents recently, encouraging them to give me their views, I will continue to work closely with the Highways team, and the local parish and Cornwall councillors."

The junction has been an ongoing issue the MP has campaigned on, following a series of separate, serious collisions at the same site. Last month, National Highways revealed it had also planned for a series of new 'safety measures' after a road safety study was conducted last year.

National Highways said it has been working with both Cornwall Council and Devon and Cornwall Police on various proposed safety improvements. The study has focussed on collision data along a section of the A30 between Kennards House and Five Lanes.

CornwallLive reported that the improvements are currently being designed and, dependent on funding, could be delivered by next summer. The measures focus on six junctions – Plusha, Trevell, Two Bridges, Blackhill Quarry, Polyphant and the Highways maintenance depot.

Emergency services were called to the scene at 8.25am and the road was closed in both directions shortly after. A woman sustained life-threatening injuries and despite medical attention, was confirmed to have died at the scene.

The woman's next of kin have been informed. It is not believed that anyone else sustained any injuries, and emergency services remain at the scene to carry out enquiries.

Devon and Cornwall Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the crash, or who has dashcam footage to contact the force. Anyone with information is asked to call 101 quoting log 143 of 7/11/24.
