The UK is set to be battered by further wind and rain as many parts of the country are still left reeling from the impacts of Storm Eowyn.

Yet more stormy weather is set to move in today, Sunday January 26, which has been named as Storm Herminia by the Spanish Meteorological Service due to its expected impact that has prompted several weather warnings to be issued across Spain on Monday. Before then, however, this weather system is set to cause disruption in parts of the UK, with forecasters warning that it will set back some ongoing Storm Eowyn recovery efforts.

Brizlee Wood in Northumberland recorded the highest wind speed in England as Eowyn hit on Friday, January 24, with gusts peaking at a blistering 96 miles per hour. The storm wreaked havoc across the UK including in the North East, with rail services and flights cancelled, fallen trees and building damage leading to closures, and overturned lorries on major roads in the region.

Wet and windy weather is expected to return on Sunday and into the start of next week, with more weather warnings having been issued by the Met Office for parts of Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and south west England, although the North East is forecast to escape the worst of Storm Herminia's impact.

While Storm Herminia did not meet the criteria to be named by the Met Office's storm naming group, forecasters have warned that the system could still lead to travel disruption, flooding and power cuts in parts of the UK on Sunday and into next week.

Met Office Chief Meteorologist Jason Kelly said: "While Sunday's system doesn’t have the same strength as Eowyn, it will hamper some recovery efforts and bring further wind and rain, with the possibility of some flooding in places. 10-20mm of rain will fall quite widely on Sunday in central and southern England, much of Wales and Northern Ireland, with 30-50mm possible over high ground. Thundery showers could top up totals later in the day for some.

"With this rain falling on saturated ground in many places, there’s a chance of flooding for some, with winds an accompanying hazard with the system," he added.

The RAC have also warned that drivers should continue to take extra care on the roads as fallen trees and debris alongside flooding are expected to cause further disruption, with the possibility of longer journey times and blocked routes. "Motorists should still take great care and allow more time for their journeys or delay them until the worst weather has passed," a spokesperson said.

According to the North East weather forecast for Sunday, winds will strengthen and a band of rain will move in this afternoon following a fine but chilly start across the region. Here's what the weather looks like hour-by-hour in Newcastle.
