More than 50 schools in the North East will be closed on Friday as Storm Eowyn is expected to cause disruption across the region.

A Met Office weather warning for strong winds will be in place from 6am until 9pm on Friday, January 24, with gusts of up to 90mph forecasted in the region. An amber weather warning has been issued across the North East, while parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland have been issued with a rare red weather warning.

Many rail operators took the early decision to issue a 'do not travel' alert for passengers travelling in the north of England on Friday. LNER added that no trains will be running north of Newcastle in both directions on Friday. Metro also issued updated travel guidance on Thursday. Other venues and events closed or cancelled have been announced throughout the day.

Meanwhile, Borders Buses, which provides school transport in Northumberland, also made the decision to cancel the operation of all their school bus services and local bus services that they operate for the duration of Friday, January 24, in light of Storm Éowyn.

A statement on the Northumberland County Council website said: "Although an amber weather warning is currently in place for Northumberland many of their drivers reside across the border which is subject to a red weather warning. This decision is made in the interests of driver and customer safety and as such no alternative travel arrangements are being put in place."

A total of 56 schools in Northumberland have so far announced their closure due to the "weather warning and potential health and safety risk".
