Parts of the North East are set to see up to two inches of rainfall, according to a weather map.

The map from WXChart shows a massive wall of water will hit the UK next weekend, bringing with it torrential downpours. Around two inches of rain could fall in Newcastle and surrounding areas, with other cities like Birmingham, Manchester, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Belfast also affected.

The huge amount of rain is due to fall at around 6pm on Saturday, September 14. The Met Office's long range forecast reads: “The focus for wetter weather overall is more likely to return to north and especially northwestern areas, whilst southern and eastern areas have a greater chance of being drier relative to earlier in the month. Temperatures are likely to be around average overall, though with greater potential for brief spells of warm weather in the south.”

It comes as the Met Office warned millions of Brits will be hit by "heavy and thundery rain" this weekend. A flood warning is in place in parts of the UK as the weather office states heavier lashings of rain are on their way. The "heavy and thundery rain" is set to arrive today (September 7) on the south coast and move northwards overnight. It is expected to affect central and southern England and Wales.

Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist Dan Harris added: “Reminiscent of this time last week, the forecast for later this weekend comes with larger uncertainties than average. This is due to a more complex than usual meteorological pattern involving multiple corridors of heavy, locally thundery rain revolving around a slow moving area of low pressure.

"We are keeping warnings under review, and will look to issue them over the weekend as confidence increases, so please keep up to date with our latest forecasts and warnings."

Fresher, cooler temperatures are expected to sweep across the UK this week, becoming notably cool in the north by mid-week. Conditions look to remain generally unsettled during next week, with showers or longer spells of rain at times for most regions, accompanied by blustery winds.

Spells of heavy rain will continue through Sunday as the Met Office expects showers in southern and central areas of the country while fresher, cooler temperatures will follow at the start of next week, though the forecast is unsettled.
