North Korean state media has likened Donald Trump to Adolf Hitler and the US president's "America First" policies to Nazism.

Mr Trump's "two-nation strategy" towards the Korean Peninsula is "based on Hitler's dictatorial policies that separate people from their peers, justifies oppression and creates an atmosphere of fear in American political, social, media and information circles", an editorial published on Tuesday by the Korea Central News Agency claimed.

Mr Trump's policies on immigration are "no different from the racist policies of fascism" and "denigrate the history of America".

"Since the rise of 'America First', the world has never had a calm day", the editorial stated.

The American leader's "reactionary ideology" is encouraging "invasionism" and seeks to "trample on the sovereignty, livelihoods and rights of development of other nations in order to benefit the United States".

"America First is the US version of Nazism that gripped the last century with its cruelty and exclusivity", it added.

The editorial also criticised the US administration for bringing about "a vicious cycle of destruction, slaughter and instability in the Middle East" and eroding the global environment by withdrawing from the Paris treaty on climate change.

The editorial concludes with a call for "all nations to unite and fight against US hegemony".

Pyongyang is stepping up the rhetoric against both the US and South Korea ahead of a state visit by Moon Jae-in, the new South Korean president, to Washington later this week.

Methods to deal with North Korea's nuclear weapons programme and its development of intercontinental ballistic missiles will be high on the agenda.

North Korea's Rodong Sinmun newspaper described Mr Trump as a "lunatic" in a recent editorial and said the US would suffer a "major disaster" should it carry out a pre-emptive attack against the regime of Kim Jong-un.
