North Korea: President Trump unveils new sanctions aimed at choking reclusive state’s economy

Donald Trump unveiled sweeping new US sanctions against North Korea on Thursday as part of the latest effort to halt the country’s new clear weapons programme. The president hailed an order which will boost the US Treasury’s powers to clamp down on firms and entities that trade with Pyongyang. “Our new executive order will cut off sources of revenue that fund North Korea’s efforts to develop the deadliest weapons known to humankind,” Trump said. Trump also praised a move by China’s central bank which ordered Chinese lenders to stop doing business with North Korea. On Tuesday Trump vowed to “totally destroy” the North if it posed a threat to the US and its allies in the region. The order comes less than two weeks after the United Nations approved tough new sanctions against Kim Jong-un’s regime following Pyongyang’s sixth and most powerful nuclear test.
