North Lanarkshire schools to close due to red weather warning

All North Lanarkshire schools will be closed on Friday amid the rare red weather warning surrounding Storm Eowyn.

The local authority announced the closure on social media channels, saying: “All schools and education establishments including early learning facilities will be closed on Friday, January 24.”

Families were advised: “You will receive updates from your school or nursery.” Additional service updates will be posted at www.northlanarkshire.gov.uk/weather

New College Lanarkshire has also announced the closure of all five of its campuses, at Motherwell, Coatbridge, Cumbernauld, Broadwood and Kirkintilloch.

Officials posted: “Due to the red weather warning, all New College Lanarkshire campuses will be closed on Friday, January 24. Where possible staff will be working from home and will contact students to make alternative teaching arrangements. Please take care and stay safe.”

The red weather warning is in place for both North and South Lanarkshire and 20 other council areas across the central belt and southern Scotland from 10am to 5pm on Friday.

Met Office forecasters are advising of “very strong winds causing very dangerous conditions and significant disruption”, including “flying debris resulting in danger to life, very dangerous driving conditions with fallen trees on roads, power cuts affecting other services such as mobile phone coverage, damage to buildings and homes with roofs blown off and power lines brought down, and roads, bridges and railway lines closed, with delays and cancellations”.

The weather warning states: “Winds will rapidly increase from Friday mid-morning onwards into the afternoon, with peak gusts of 80-90 mph fairly widely; this brings the risk of significant disruption to transport and power supplies as well as dangerous conditions outdoors. Winds will gradually ease through Friday evening.”
