An investigation is underway and a police cordon is in place after firefighters dealt with a fire in North Shields. Just after 8pm on Monday, both Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service and Northumbria Police responded to the blaze on Nile Street.

The emergency services are still at the scene this morning, and due to the police cordon, the road remains closed. Enquiries into the cause of the fire are ongoing, and officers are on the scene.

During the incident last night, Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service posted this message on X: "There is an ongoing incident in Nile Street North Shields. We are advising local residents to keep doors and windows closed and for members of the public to stay away from the area."

"Enquiries into the cause of the fire are ongoing. Anyone with concerns is encouraged to speak with an officer on duty."

A Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "We can confirm that yesterday evening (Monday 25th November) six appliances attended a building fire in the North Shields area of North Tyneside.

"The emergency call was received by our Control Room team at 7.50 p.m. and the first appliance was on scene within four-minutes. The crews were in attendance from Hebburn, Marley Park, Newcastle Central, South Shields, Tynemouth and West Denton Community Fire Stations.

"An early warn and inform message was issued by the service advising local people to avoid the area and keep their windows and doors closed. This messaging has since been lifted.

"The initial fire had spread between two buildings, both residential and commercial properties. Our crews used an aerial ladder platform, three water jets and two breathing apparatus teams to assist in putting out the fire.

"We worked closely with representatives from Northumbria Police, North East Ambulance Service, North Tyneside Council and local utility companies.

"The fire has been safely extinguished and crews left the scene at 12.45 am on Tuesday morning. One appliance is still in attendance to dampen down the location."
