North Staffordshire homes evacuated as bomb squad called in
Families were evacuated after a grenade was found on a North Staffordshire street. Bomb disposal experts were scrambled to Clare Avenue, between Porthill and Bradwell, where a number of homes were taped off.
Today Staffordshire Police have confirmed that the device was thought to have been from World War Two. The alarm was raised just before 2.30pm on Monday afternoon.
A spokeswoman for the force said: "Officers attended and assisted in the evacuation of nearby residents as a precaution. Colleagues from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) attended the scene to assess the device, which was believed to be a grenade. An assessment showed that the device was inactive and no further action was required. Residents returned to their properties a short time later."
