Michael O'Neill has been pleased with the work put in by his Northern Ireland squad in the build up to Saturday night's friendly against Spain. O'Neill has taken advantage of the extra time with his players at the training camp in Murcia with more time spent on the training pitch.

The only downside for the Northern Ireland boss has been the withdrawal of striker Dion Charles, who has failed to recover from a knee injury. Overall though O'Neill feels his side are in a good place ahead of the game in Mallorca.

“The players and staff have had a great week training and preparing for the important friendly against Spain," said O'Neill. “We have had a really good six or seven days. We have a good young group who are bonding well, training well together, and spending their downtime wisely whilst working hard on the pitch. They have a great work ethic and there is a good mood around the camp.

“Some players came in later to the camp because of their club schedules. We have a full bill of health other than Dion who had to withdraw due to the knee injury that he had. Dion has left the camp, which is obviously the right thing for him to do, and we send him our best wishes. This has left us with a squad of 25 players.”

Northern Ireland take on Spain at the Son Moix Stadium in Palma on Saturday night [8.30pm] before they face Andorra at the Estadio Nueva Condomina in Murcia on Tuesday night, June 11
