The Met Office has issued a new weather warning for snow and ice across Northern Ireland - with some spots set to see up to 10cm of snowfall.

The yellow weather warning comes into effect at 3pm today, Thursday, November 21, and is in place until 10am tomorrow, Friday, November 22.

As for what we can expect, the weather forecaster advised showers will become more frequent this afternoon, turning to snow, with icy patches expected overnight. The weather alert is in place across all six counties of Northern Ireland.

A spokesperson for the Met Office explained: "Showers are expected to become more frequent during the afternoon and evening, feeding south across Northern Ireland and turning to snow above 150m. Some places could see 2-5cm of fresh snow, with a further 10cm over mountain tops.

"Icy patches are expected to develop on untreated surfaces during the evening and overnight as temperatures drop below freezing."

Adding how this will impact road users, the Met Office added:

  • Some roads and railways likely to be affected with longer journey times by road, bus and train services

  • Probably some icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths

  • Some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces

It comes after a number of weather warnings for snow and ice have been issued in recent days as temperatures plummet across Northern Ireland. There have been a number of delays reported on the roads and to public transport services due to the weather.
