Council bosses have been left red-faced after two different speed limit warning signs were put up on the same road.

Baffled motorists found the 20mph and 30mph signs directly opposite one another, giving mixed messages about how fast they can travel on a Middledale Road in Nottingham.

Simon Brown, 23, who lives on the road, said: ‘When I spotted it I didn't know what to think. Had someone put them the wrong way around or are they supposed to be like that?

‘Then I realised it must have been an error. But who makes a mistake like that?

‘It will definitely confuse drivers, because they've been talking about changing the speed limit around here.

Nottingham City Council confirmed Middledale Road is part of its new 20mph zones introduced around the nearby Parkdale Primary School.

They said the signs should both say 30mph to inform motorists the speed limit is increasing as they leave the road and head into Oakdale Road.

A spokesman for the council added: 'Both these signs should be 30mph and now that this mistake has been brought to our attention, we will rectify it.'

Pensioner Colin Lawton, 75, who also lives on the road, added: ‘It's quite the blooper.

‘My wife noticed it last week, and was amused by it like everyone else.

‘I think it's comical more than dangerous but it's clear nobody is checking the work they are doing.’
