You can now participate in one of Jane Fonda's climate change rallies from home

Jane Fonda, like the rest of us, will be staying home for a while. But she won’t be staying quiet. The actress, who has become even more well known for her activism (and that red coat), is taking her fight for environmental action to the screens—and you can join her. On Wednesday, Fonda launched a partnership with Greenpeace to make Fire Drill Fridays, the political demonstrations addressing climate change she’s been hosting, go virtual.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the actress and activist will be hosting monthly virtual rallies and additional programming on Fridays. The goal? “To continue to keep the pressure on politicians to adopt a Green New Deal, end new fossil fuels, and enact a just transition to a renewable economy that protects workers and communities,” a Greenpeace spokesperson said in a statement.

The first event in the virtual Fire Drill Fridays series will take place on Friday, March 27th at 11 a.m. Pacific.

Fonda will be leading a teach-in, talking with Senator Ed Markey about climate change and “the importance of staying engaged in the age of COVID-19.” Anyone is free to join via the Zoom webinar here. The Hollywood Reporter also reports that a youth-themed rally will be held on April 3rd at 11 a.m. with Fonda and other climate activists.

The original iteration of Fire Drill Fridays first launched in October, after Fonda moved to Washington D.C. to be at the epicenter of the climate fight (and to get arrested on purpose). The Grace and Frankie actress, inspired by young climate activist Greta Thunberg, has dedicated her time (as well as her entire Instagram feed) to addressing climate change and pushing for government action. Huge celebrities like Timothée Chalamet, Ted Danson, Rooney Mara, and many, many more have joined her (and gotten arrested with her).

Even though quarantine is preventing Fonda from fighting out in the streets, she says now is no time to slow down.

“We may be staying home, and yes, we must stay home, but we will never stop speaking out about the climate crisis and demanding our leadership take action,” added Fonda in the statement.

And she’s urging others to join alongside her (from afar).

“While you are quarantined at home, we hope you will join us virtually because our movement is not slowing down,” she continued. “The rapid spread of the novel coronavirus in America has exposed the catastrophic weaknesses in our healthcare system and social safety net. Our government must support those suffering from the triple threat of COVID-19, the climate crisis, and a looming recession by investing in an economy beyond fossil fuels.”

Fonda concluded by emphasizing that all are welcome—and all are needed—in the fight.

“Whether you are new to this conversation or are already invested in combating this crisis—we need you and we hope you will join us.”
